History
Aberdeen Township is a township in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. It is part of the New York Metropolitan Area and has a population of 19,329 as of 2020. It was formerly known as Matawan Township until 1977 when it changed its name to create a separate identity from Matawan Borough.
Aberdeen Township has a rich history dating back to the colonial era. It was part of Middletown Township until 1848 when it became part of Raritan Township. In 1857, it split from Raritan Township and became Matawan Township. It was home to several historic events such as the Battle of Monmouth during the American Revolution, the Matawan shark attacks of 1916 that inspired Jaws, and the first wireless telegraph message sent by Guglielmo Marconi in 1899.
