History

Englishtown is a small borough located in Monmouth County, New Jersey, with a population ranging from 1,847 to 2,355 residents as of 2010. Its name derived from James English, an early settler who acquired land in the region prior to 1730. The town was officially incorporated as a borough in 1888. Englishtown holds historical significance as it played a role in the Revolutionary War’s Battle of Monmouth. 

During the battle that occurred on June 28th, 1778, Englishtown served as a staging area for George Washington’s army. It remained the headquarters for Washington’s strategy planning and troop placement from June 25th to June 28th. He also directed some of his soldiers to cover his right flank at Combs Hill near Englishtown. Thanks to its history-rich background and great location within Monmouth County, Englishtown has seen growth over time and continues to be an attractive place for residents.

As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough’s population was 1,847, reflecting a decline of 308 (-14.2%) from the 2,155 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn declined by 4 (-0.2%) from the 2,159 counted in the 1990 Census.

Englishtown’s population is predominantly white, with 93.7% of the population identifying as white and 2.6% identifying as African American. The median age of residents is 43.1, and the median household income is $66,250.

Englishtown has seen a population decline in recent years, with a population decline of 8.3% between 2010 and 2020. The population density is 2,621 people per square mile (1,007/km2). Englishtown’s population is largely concentrated in the northeastern portion of the borough, with the majority of the population living near Main Street.
