History

Howell Township was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 23, 1801, from portions of Shrewsbury Township.

Portions of the township were taken to form Brick Township in the newly created Ocean County (February 15, 1850), Wall Township (March 7, 1851) and Farmingdale (April 8, 1903)23.

The history of Howell Township is connected to its location along the Manasquan River, where humans have lived since ancient times.

Archeologists have estimated that Paleo-Indians (ancient Native Americans) settled in the Manasquan watershed as early as 9000 BC4.

According to the 2020 United States Census, Howell Township had a population of 53,537 people, which represented an increase of 2,462 (+4.8%) from the previous census in 2010.

The population density was 884.4 people per square mile (341.5/km2).

The racial makeup of the township was 86.9% White, 4.3% Black or African American, 0.2% Native American, 4.6% Asian, 0% Pacific Islander, and 3% from other races or two or more races.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 12% of the population.
