Millstone is a name that refers to two different places in New Jersey: a borough in Somerset County and a township in Monmouth County. Both places have a rich history and offer various attractions and amenities for residents and visitors.

History

The borough of Millstone was originally known as Somerset Courthouse and was the county seat of Somerset County. It was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on May 14, 1894, from portions of Hillsborough Township, based on the results of a referendum held that day. The borough was reincorporated on March 12, 1928. The name Millstone comes from an incident in which a millstone was dropped into the nearby Millstone River.

The township of Millstone was formed from surrounding borders from Freehold, Monroe and Upper Freehold Townships. The municipality was formed and incorporated by an act of legislation on February 28, 1844. It contains a grand total of 23,700 acres or 37.36 square miles of rolling countryside located in the heart of New Jersey.

The township was named for the Millstone River (a major tributary of the Raritan River), whose name derives from an incident in which a millstone was dropped into it. The headwaters for the Millstone River originate in the township of Millstone and flow through central New Jersey to join the Raritan River.
