Shrewsbury is a borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. It is located in the New York metropolitan area and is part of the larger Jersey Shore region. According to the 2010 United States Census, the borough’s population was 2,539, reflecting a decline of 104 (-4.0%) from the 2,643 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 478 (+22.1%) from the 2,165 counted in the 1990 Census.
Shrewsbury was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 15, 1926, from portions of Shrewsbury Township, based on the results of a referendum held on May 18, 1926.
The earliest known record of slaves in New Jersey dates to 1680, when Colonel Lewis Morris of Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, is identified as the owner of two slaves. In the 1790 Census, slaves were enumerated in Shrewsbury Township, with a total of 12 slaves in the township. The borough was once known as the “winter white bass capital of the world” with an annual white bass run in the Navesink River.

The racial makeup of Shrewsbury was 87.02% White, 3.11% African American, 0.07% Native American, 7.53% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.76% from other races, and 1.48% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.15% of the population.
